Cleveland Spring Academy 2023
What is Spring Academy?: A field hockey training academy to develop as a total field hockey athlete, which includes weekly practices and optional tournament opportunities. In FHL's Spring Academy, athletes will develop individual skill with technical training, learn team tactical concepts in small-sided games, and have the option to compete in tournament opportunities. Our Spring Academy is full of coaches with extensive coaching experience who love the game and find joy in coaching the next generation of athletes in this great sport! Who can join FHL's Spring Academy?: U14, U16, & U19 athletes of all skill levels (beginner to advanced!) U8, U10, and U12 athletes should visit our clinic page here for information on youth clinics! *For U14, U16, & U19 athletes looking for the most competitive training environment, information on our select program is at the bottom of the page. When and where are Spring Academy practices? All Cleveland athletes: Hathaway Brown, Shaker Heights, OH 2 hour time block between 12-4PM April 2nd, 16th (diff. location TBD on this date), 23rd, 30th May 7th, 14th, 21st, June 4th, 11th, 18th Athletes named to a select program: In addition to the Sunday sessions at HB and designated Sunday sessions in Columbus, select athletes will also have practices on Tuesday evenings at HB from 6:30-7:45pm When and where are Spring Academy tournaments? - Sat. April 22nd: Aim 7v7 Showdown, Saint Louis, MO ($75) - Sun., May 14th: Witt 7v7 Tournament in Springfield, OH ($60) - Sat., May 27th: 7v7 Derby Classic in Louisville, KY ($60) - Sun., June 11th: Midwest Youth Festival in Oxford, OH or Cincinnati, OH ($50) - Sun., June 11th: MWC Invitational (U16 & U19) Details TBD |
What is the Select Program?
Our select program is the most competitive option for U14, U16, & U19 Spring Academy participants and brings together competitive athletes from across Ohio and Western PA to train and compete together as a dedicated group.
Select program practices are listed below and occur in Columbus, OH.
How do I become a part of the Select Program?
All interested athletes must be signed up for our spring academy in one of our three locations (Columbus, Cleveland, or Cincinnati) in order to tryout for the Select Program. Athletes should sign-up for the Spring Academy location that best fits their schedule and location, but if picked for the select team, are always welcome to train at any of our three locations during the week.
Athletes must attend a tryout (details below) in order to be considered for the select program. If you are unable to attend the tryout below, you must notify the staff as early as possible to make possible arrangements for another evaluation opportunity.
Approx. 35 athletes will be named to the Select Program in each age group.
From this list of selected athletes, a final roster in each age group will be selected to compete in the Regional Club Championship on June 3rd and 4th, in hopes of qualifying for the National Club Championship.
What is my commitment as select athlete?
As a select athlete, it is expected that you attend the Select practices listed below, as well as as many Spring Academy practices as possible.
Any conflicts must be communicated to the coaches as soon as possible.
By trying out for select, you are committing to making yourself available for the Select tournaments listed below.
What are the additional fees associated with being a select athlete?
In addition to signing up for Spring Academy, there will be additional fees for:
- Tryouts ($30)
- Extra select program practices ($110)
- Tournament opportunities (a la carte, listed below)
- Select uniform (only if athlete doesn't have one already)
When are Select Program tryouts?
Tryouts for the select program are April 2 for all age groups (U14, U16, & U19) at Columbus Academy from 8:45am-11:30am.
All athletes, regardless of location in Ohio or Pennsylvania, should plan to attend this tryout.
When are Select Program practices?
Select athletes will train during the regularly scheduled Spring Academy practices listed above,
PLUS have additional practice time locally during the week (specifics TBD),
PLUS have additional team practices in Columbus in preparation for Regional Club Championship and Regional Club Cup listed below.
As a Select athlete in Cleveland, you do NOT have to travel to the Spring Academy practices in Columbus. You will only need to travel to Columbus for the select program practices listed below, and will attend as many Cleveland spring academy practices as you can, plus the additional local Cleveland weekday select trainings that are TBA.
- April 2nd - Tryouts: Columbus Academy Hondros Field in Columbus, OH from 8:45-11:30am
(2 hours for each age group)
- April 23rd - Practice: Columbus Academy Hondros Field in Columbus, OH 2:00-5:00pm
(1.5 hours for each age group)
- April 30th - Practice: Columbus Academy Hondros Field in Columbus, OH 2:00-5:00pm
(1.5 hours for each age groups)
- May 7th - Practice: Columbus Academy Carlin Field in Columbus, OH 9am-12pm
(1.5 hours for each age group)
- May 21st - Practice: Columbus Academy Carlin Field in Columbus, OH 9am-12pm

What are the Select Program tournaments?
In addition to the Spring Academy 7v7 tournaments listed above which are completely optional, Select athletes will be assigned to compete in 11v11 tournament opportunities, including but not limited to (additional fees apply):
- April 15-April 16th: Ann Arbor Play Day
($TBD)
- May 13-May 14th: Midwest Classic League Round 1 (Univ of Michigan)
($80)
- June 3-4th: Regional Club Championships (Miami University)
($175)
- June 3-4th: Regional Club Cup (Miami University)
($175)
- Saturday, June 10th: Midwest Classic League Finals (Miami University)
($80)
- If qualified from RCC, June 23-25: U14 National Club Championship (Virginia Beach, VA)
- If qualified from RCC, June 26-28: U16 National Club Championship (Virginia Beach, VA)
- If qualified from RCC, June 29-July 1: U19 National Club Championship (Virginia Beach, VA)
