Overview:

The Goalkeeping Academy is a 10 week program designed to advance the skills of keepers at all levels of play.  Each 90 minute session builds on concepts of the position.  Keepers will be progressed through drills that give them opportunity for repetitions along with a variety of situations to provide context and decision making.
 
With over 30 years of experience, we recognize that all keepers are not the same and success in a situation can come in different ways.  Using an Athlete centered coaching philosophy, goalkeepers will be guided through understanding the core principles of skills to help them understand their strengths and weaknesses.  Our goal is to help keepers to become independent players that can identify how to best play situations and monitor their own play.

Session 1 - Movement and Stance.  Dynamic warm up incorporating stretching.  Agilities.  Balance in movement.  Eye hand and eye foot coordination.  Fundamentals of stance.  Equipment review.  Kicking and stance.

Session 2 - Kicking and circle control.  First time clearances with a variety of ball heights.  Footwork and body mechanics.  Changing angles.  Ability to kick with either foot.  Stepping up on the ball.  Keeper as the start of attack/possession clears.

Session 3 - Small games with keepers playing a circle defenders

Session 4 - Saving skills.  Understanding the toolbox.  Stance and save areas.  Using pace and location to use appropriate skill.  Movement and balance.  Angles.  Quality save/clears.

Session 5 - Second phase skills.  Playing the ball after the first shot.  Following the play.  Ground skills, diving and smothering.  Decision making and expanding the toolbox.

Session 6-10 - Goalkeeping in Indoor hockey.  Indoor hockey provides keepers with an increased role over field hockey with a larger scoring area and more chances in a game to make decisions and plays in the game.  Saturday morning sessions will provide keepers with position specific training as well as the opportunity to play on Field Hockey Life teams in games.

The Academy is designed to accommodate keepers at all levels of play.  Level 1 is geared for beginning and intermediate keepers and Level 2 is suited for more advanced players.  Space is capped at six keepers per level.  Coaches are welcome to attend sessions.  Please contact us for additional information or if you have questions.
